Schaffhausen

City Views.259

At the top, two last photos from my day in Zurich; just above & gallery below, last shots from the several hours wandering around Schaffhausen before and after dusk the day before.

The Christmas market in the little village in and around the castle above the Rhine waterfall – all of which I visited the very next day after the outing shown in the last couple posts in the mountains above Bellinzona, much further south in Switzerland. At the bottom you see the tunnel under this caste, as taken from the rail and foot bridge over the river.

Signs of the City.111

Schaffhausen’s pre-Christmas town center at dusk. That’s me drinking my first-ever mulled white wine in the town square with that … interesting … fountain. The Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) visit and this short exploration of Schaffhausen city center were all a wee excursion out from Zurich where’d I’d dropped my luggage in a locker upon arrival, so as to make use of the last daylight before returning to Zurich later that evening. (Btw just tap or click on any photo that the automatic gallery has cropped if you want to see all of it, e.g. all of my face but they’re all auto-cropped, rather annoyingly tbh.)

We’ve shown you the Rheinfall, or Rhine Falls, and also the city of Schaffhausen just upstream from it, before. These are most of my remaining shots of the Rhine and the Rhine Falls. I’m saving a few for a new series I expect to launch in the new year :-), for which I haven’t quite decided on a name yet & might even try to do something snazzy like include a poll in the first iteration to seek reader advice… Stay tuned, and may these last days of 2024 be full of people, place and activities that bring  your joy and presence.

City Lights.77

Schaffhausen, back in northern Switzerland, at dusk. Zermatt, a stream whose mountainsides featured in that last post, is the southernmost German-speaking town in Italy; Schaffhausen is pretty much the northernmost canton in Switzerland…and is both German-speaking and largely surrounded by Germany. And also hosts Switzerland’s other exclave (remember the Italian Campione?), a German town just upstream from Schaffhausen which has no direct connection to the rest of Germany. No, I didn’t have time to make it there: was too busy enjoying the mulled wine and hillsides, plus Schaffhausen’s most famous feature, which we’ll show you in the next post :-).
