More from the first morning’s exploration of the slopes between the town of Zermatt and the Matterhorn. Only the bottom image here shows the Matterhorn itself b/c the other four photos were looking north, back down-valley, as I climbed up towards the hanging bridge over the creek that created the valley.

This is Uetliberg, 870 meters (2500 feet) or so above Zurich. Spent the last night of my Switzerland say, and then this last day (before the overnight train back to Amsterdam), exploring the city with a local friend who was also my host. We hoped the clouds- mist – would clear so that from the viewing tower, we’d see Zurich. But as this gallery demonstrates, from the viewing platform a long climb above the top of the mountain proper, the mountain itself and everything below it was still shrouded in clouds and mist. But the alps rose above the clouds :-). In the bottom photo, you see just a bit of a tree ghosting into the bottom left corner, while the southern alps rise above the clouds in the distance. It was an interesting and somewhat surreal experience.

Taken as the Gondola swung towards its doc up at the top of what they call, I believe, the “Little Matterhorn” which is the highest gondola station or in the alps, or maybe the only year-round skiing option in the alps, or something of that sort. (I could verify it all in guidebooks or online, but will leave readers to do so if you choose.) Suffice for now to say these three photos were all taken while swinging in a different kind of metal enclosure in mid-air 🙂 en route to another high point looking at the alps – and yes, that’s the real Matterhorn again to the left of the left line of cables.

In case anyone’s trying to follow along, these are all taken looking away from the Matterhorn, i.e. looking north to the village of Zermatt and the mountains north and east of the Matterhorn across one or more valleys. And all from that first morning hike last Tuesday – I really am deleting a lot of photos, but everywhere one turns around here, one sees beauty and I do love to enjoy and share beauty, as my small but loyal band of readers knows :-).

Mountains.55

This is – should you have any doubt – the Matterhorn as seen from a much higher elevation than I showed you in our very first post from Zermatt, a few days ago. As yesterday evening’s post noted, I’ve now amassed many lovely images and experiences of sunny landscapes full of mountains – and, especially beginning with yesterday’s delightful multi-connection journey from Zermatt over to Bissone (in Ticino Canton, the southernmost part of Switzerland) – quite a few more of lovely lakes and lakeside towns and villages with mountains rising behind them. These lovely sunny views will hopefully boost me in the darker rainier A’dam months days ahead. On the purely photo side, they also mean I’ll concentrate on these two series for a bit :-).

As I mentioned yesterday, I was heading to Switzerland from Paris. This is me today in Switzerland … in mid-air on a suspension bridge. Looking directly down from said bridge, you’d see what I show you next. Thereafter, a few more scenic shots all from mid-air on that bridge :-). The village in the valley is Zermatt, my home for a few more nights this week. Some of you may be able to deduce what this means you’re likely to see next…

From the Air.45

You’re seeing the eastern corner of Lac Léman with the alps behind it, and the city of Montreux on the left center of the photo. This and the images below are the remaining shots I want to share from my last visit to Geneva by air, in February.

City Views.224

Last shots from Geneva, til our next visit: the number of mountain shots I’ve amassed on this current visit in the US means I need no longer retain any of these lovely alp shots for future entries in that series 🙂

Then sun peaking through clouds over the alps during a February morning walk in Geneva.

Mountains.32

Pretty sure that’s Mont Blanc rising in the distance on our February approach to Geneva.

From The Air.38

2023 saw my first — and second! — visit to Geneva, with the second visit giving me the chance to watch the sun rise over mountains and lakes in France and Switzerland (above), with distant views including Mt Blanc back in France on the “far side” of Switzerland, as it were, from the side on which our plane had entered. The return flight from that first visit was an evening flight that let me watch the sun set over France and then watch cities over France, Belgium and NL light up (below) before we came in for our landing at Schiphol here in A’dam. One gallery for each flight, below.
