I’ve biked and even walked past this building literally hundreds of times, but had never noticed this lovely mural which in my view fits well into my “graffiti art” tag, though the other graffito of which I’ve left a small portion to the bottom right is more in the “teenage annoyance” category than the “art” one. Either it’s new, or the door was always up, or I was just focused on other things. This mural depicts what you’d have seen in the old days, when trams ran regularly down this line, with the “Haarlemmermeerstation” right behind it.
This is the view a person would have had, in those days, if they’d swiveled 90 degrees to the left, from the perspective in which I took this photo. That’s more info that you need, but perhaps useful for any who’ve visited me, in situating yourself. I’ve shown blog viewers the brick building in one or two posts taken from its far side, and this alleyway (which is now mostly used for bikes, parking, gyms and flea-market stores) only once thus far…but I’ve passed along it just about any time I took photos that are tagged “Park Schinkeleilanden,” for anyone curious enough to try to fit it all together :-).
On the beach by the small South-Holland village of Wassenaar, on the night from 27 to 28 February, 1944, several French resistance fighters landed to support the Dutch resistance effort. Slightly more than 79 years later, Nikos and I visited the beach (on our way back from the short outing I showed you earlier), within days of the anniversary and commemoration, and were moved by the wreaths honoring these lost lives, so many decades later.
The foreground is an island, from which I took this canal view, so I get to categorize it in this series if I want to. Plus, it’s my blog anyway so I can categorize how I like :-). But I do need to get out and explore some bigger islands again soon, or this series will have to go into hibernation… 😦
I had enough miles to get a cheap night at a nice hotel on the coast south of the Hague, but 20k of them were going to expire end of March. Out of that circumstance came a two days / one night exploring the coast. We found walking the dunes and beach quite invigorating, and the weather was generally conducive.
I created a tag called “graffiti art” years ago, I think when I visited Melbourne for the Australian Open in 2009. Recent days have given me opportunity to appreciate the differences between graffiti (art) styles in Amsterdam and SF – wait for some of my mural photos taken on my last morning in SF, and also for some I believe I got while I was up Eureka. 🙂
So yes, we landed early Tuesday in Amsterdam. While I was away, the crocuses faded, the leaves remained absent from the trees (though many are strongly in bud by now), and as you see in these photos taken while walking to stay awake, the tulips are coming into their season.
